Yerevan/Mediamax/. The Greek community of Armenia hails the discussion of the draft law on “Condemning the Genocide of Pontian Greeks, Assyrians and Other Nations in the Ottoman Empire”.
Head of the Greek community of Armenia Arkady Khitarov noted talking to Mediamax that the Greeks of Armenia have been waiting for this initiative for a long time.

“We have turned to the Armenian government many times asking to recognize the Genocide of Pontian Greeks and have long been waiting for this step. Armenia should recognize the fact as the Armenian people knows quite well what genocide is”, said the head of the community.

Genocide of Pontian Greeks is referred to as the slaughter of Greeks living in the historical Pontus located on the territory of Ottoman Turkey by Young Turks in early 20th century.

All in all, about 500 thousand Greeks fell victim to the Genocide. The Genocide of Pontian Greeks is officially recognized by Cyprus, Greece and Sweden.
